If it looks like a snake and slithers like a snake, it must be a…. lizard?

My wise old grandmother often said that if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it must be a duck. Yesterday at the San Diego Zoo, near the new Reptile Walk, is a Scheltopusik, or European Glass Lizard (Pseudopus apodus). It looks like this one at SeaWorld:

The one yesterday afternoon at the Zoo was being photogenic:

I think my wise old grandmother would say, “If it looks like a snake and slithers like a snake, it must be a snake.

  1. This is bad timing because there is something slithering in the ceiling here right now!
Apart from that, unbelievable photos because the snake looks quite friendly and amenable – how the hell did you do that?!

    • Patience, which means that one has to go to the Zoo alone. Otherwise everyone else is yelling, “Come on, Russel. Let’s go, You already have 75,000 pictures!”

      • Okay – well, if you have that kind of patience, you might be the best person to climb into our ceiling and photograph whatever is up there (I promise not to lock you in). I can pay you for this job with white peacock feathers. Is it a deal?

  2. You are a helluva photographer — I’ve never seen a photo of a snake looking .. uh, sweet! LOL! :)

  3. thats one odd-looking and cool snake! :)

  4. Great shots, but I can’t bring myself to LIKE anything with a snake in it. Maybe he could come and get the rat I saw at my bird feeder, though! Snakes trump rats.

  5. Wonderful photos. I know I shouldn’t anthropomorphize, but the snake’s expression looks almost human.

  6. Have never seen a smiley snake before! Amazing shots Russel :-)

  7. I covet Zoey, but I don’t covet the lizard!

  8. Ew, however it walks and quacks – i wouldn’t like to meet it tete-a-tete! I like much more the pic of the cool cat on printer <3

  9. Wow, these are the best shots I have seen in a long time!!!!

  10. oh, I am sorry, that looks prehistoric and scary

  11. “i’m a crawlin king snake” yeah, john lee hooker memory there . . . i gotta get out more

  12. He was totally posing and smiling for you! HAHA

  13. Fascinating animal! And such a diva as well. :D
