King of the……. snakes?
The new Reptile Walk opened at the San Diego Zoo on July 4. Of course, I was first in line to get into the Zoo that morning. It’s absolutely gorgeous, a great addition to the reptile holdings.
And finally, after all these years, the king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) was being photogenic:
The king cobra is the longest venomous snake in the world, getting up to 18½ feet long. The resident of the San Diego Zoo is 13 feet long. Notwithstanding its name, it is not a true cobra. It is indigenous to India and Southeast Asia.

Such a wonderful zoo. It’s a bit of a trip for us (about 300 miles), but I can’t wait to take my boys there. We’ve been practicing at our dinky-dink zoo.
Great shots, especially the first one with the lovely blurred background.
I wonder what he was thinking…he looked deep in thought
contemplating something…
hmmm…is there a female King Cobra? of is she called queen?
just curious, I never thought to ask that before…
Great shots Russell…
the second one and the last one showed his armor …I like them best
Take Care…

I believe it would be a “female King Cobra.” But that begs the question, why are there no queens? For example, we have King Cobra, Kingfisher, Kingbird, King Crab, King Vulture………. Are there any Queens?
I know nothing of snakes. but they are fun to watch, especially when they are in motion.
Behind glass.
or small children.
hehehe…
Ok, that last bit probably wasn’t necessary.
And no my curiosity is carrying me off to learn more about Cobrae.
“now” my curiosity. Not “no”.
That is a pretty neat zoo! Great photos.
Very cool photos Russel. Thanks for sharing. Very photogenic indeed.
I do love reptiles. These are great photos of this cobra.
Love the pix but that third one is my favorite. Color contrast. Beautiful.
I had 21 pictures but these were the only ones worthwhile. I still can’t decide which is my favorite but I am partial to flickering tongues.
I am not a snake person but these pictures are fantastic!!
