Choices: Competition, or war?
I don’t upload videos to YouTube too often, but for the past three days I have been trying to do just that. Never had a problem before, but this time nothing would upload. Didn’t matter how long the video was, what format it was in, what time of day I tried…. The video would just hang there at 0% upload.
This morning I decided to find an answer to my problem. The YouTube help was, well, no help at all….
Except that it had several recommendations for which browsers to use to upload videos. I use Internet Explorer 9, so I did everything to IE 9 that YouTube recommended.
Survey says, XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.
Then it hit me: YouTube is owned by Google, and Google has a browser called Chrome. I thought to myself, “Self, what if Google wants me to use their Chrome brower instead of IE 9, Firefox, etc.?”
So Self downloaded Chrome, making sure to read all the default checkboxes because Self doesn’t like Chrome and doesn’t want it taking over Self’s computer and Internet experience. Even then, Chrome decided to pin itself to my IE task bar. Bad, bad, bad….
Once Self downloaded and installed Chrome, Self went back to YouTube to try to upload mp4 videos. Care to guess what happened?
I don’t mind having competition…. Choices are good, but not when one is forced to choose. I guess I could choose not to use YouTube or Google.
My opinion of this tactic:

The same thing happened to me, only with WordPress. I was using Internet Explorer and was told it was not securer and to change to a different browser if I wanted to continue to receive notifications. So I had to change to chrome. Thanks for sharing.
BE ENCOURAGED! BE BLESSED!
I think it’s not any company’s responsibility to make sure it’s compatible with all other companies, but this just smelled fishy.
Argh!
I ran your comment through Google’s translator. It said, “Expletive deleted.” lol
Arrrggghhhh!
lol
Glad we don’t have scratch and sniff screens
It’s bad. Mind you, so is Interenet Explorer! None of them work properly everywhere.
I like Internet Explorer, but maybe because I’ve been using it for 18 years and know everything about it, all the little secrets, its ins and outs, its quirkiness……. I don’t want to learn a new browser with new secrets, new ins and outs, new quirks.
By the way, I’ve been using AOL for 18 years, too! lol
Sorry, fell of chair laughing. Only ever knew of it as dial up
At that time that AOL was taking over the world, dial-up was all there was. The company I was consulting for at the time had a T5 line, so AOL and all the other dial-ups were no problem.
If AOL had never merged witih Time-Warner and lost its focus, it would still be the dominant player.
Yes, the merger was a disaster all round. Nokia looks to be going the same way – who’d have thought.
Vimeo or other alternatives look better and better most days
So funny, especially since I know those kinds of feelings, including the talking to Self… Hee, hee, Hee!!
“.”
I am very careful of anything Google. It took over my computer one time and I had to get my computer guy up here so I could enter my own computer…. That cost me real $$$ so as far as I’m concerned that’s not funny. Not glad you had the experience, but glad you passed it on, and glad someone else has had the same trick played on them. With me, I never even tried to get on Google…it’s everywhere… it came through my clicking on someone’s web site!
And it’s going to get worse before it gets better. In fact, I don’t think it’s going to get better!
Interesting that you don’t like Google Chrome, I had trouble with it and have gone back to just plain old Google.
I tried to upload a short video I’d done on my DSLR through Picasa 3 and never ever did work out what I did wrong and why it wouldn’t load – but then I’m technology challenged so I naturally don’t expect too much to work for me LOL.
Yikes! I see Snowbird here had a problem with Google, and you’re explaining YouTube is owned by Google? Crap! I use Google nearly everyday. Are there other search engines you prefer? Ping?
I have marshmallows and firewood ready for whenever you return! (not to mention Margaritas) Cheers
And is that why you don’t come camping anymore.. because I put up some YouTube vid’s? I did take your advice about only loading small pics
Hey, Gina. I used Google as my search engine. I think it provides the best results. However, I access it viia google.com. I don’t like Google Chrome as a web browser. Google and Google Chrome are two different beasts.
And as to camping. I’ll be back but I have about 600 campgrounds that I visit. Right now it’s about 17 days between camping visits. Just make sure that in addition to marshmallows, firewood, and margaritas, you have lots of activities to keep me busy. I hate camping with nothing to do.
Cool. I use Safari as my browser and will continue to use Google as my search engine. Oh how I would LOVE to pick your brain as to how you stay organized! Along with your informative blog as an inspector and all you do here, you keep up with a system for following your friends?! You once mentioned a spreadsheet you use for tracking, and I’ve been trying to figure out something. One must stay organized! Thanks Russel, I enjoy posting regularly so I’m sure you’ll find lots ‘to do’ when you return.
I have an Excel spreadsheet that has all of my followees’ email notification names, blog names, and links, so when I go camping, I simply go to my spreadsheet, hit Ctrl L (a macro I recorded to organize the spreadsheet), and then click on the links.
Lotus 1-2-3 was the killer app that caused me to by my first computer decades ago. Then Microsoft offered me Excel for free if I would send them my Lotus 1-2-3 disks. I did, and never looked back.
I see in my spreadsheet that I last camped out at your site on June 12. Guess what? You’re second in line for a camping visit from……… go ahead, guess………. yep, me! I’ll be there in about five minutes!
