I hope I made the right decision

When I was a child in Kingsville, Texas, turtles were backyard pests. They were everywhere.

In my eighteen years in San Diego I have never seen a turtle in the wild…..

…..until this afternoon!

I’m not 100% certain but I think it’s a common box turtle. Since they don’t occur naturally in California, I’m thinking that it might have been someone’s pet that either escaped or was abandoned. I was torn between leaving him and taking him home, but since he was in a protected nature preserve, I left him. I hope I made the right decision.

He looks pretty happy to me.
I love turtles and tortoises. Lovely photo – you’ve captured him at just the right angle.

He looks like a box turtle to me. After heavy rains, I often find myself stopping on the roadside to help the little fellows get to the other side safely. Sadly, most people tend to just run over our little shelled friends, and keep going. It’s rather heartbreaking.
