Santa Fe 3751 from National Train Day (May 12, 2012)
I rode the trains a total of about 200 miles on May 12, 2012, for National Train Day. A majority of my time was spent at the historic Los Angeles Union Station where the Santa Fe 3751 steam engine and many other historic cars were on display.
Following are three pictures of Santa Fe 3751.
Actually, all three pictures are the same. However, since Union Station is a very heavily used transit terminal, 3751 was shunted onto one of the worst possible tracks there for photography.
The first picture is the best I could get with my Canon 550D. Good thing I don’t rely on “getting the perfect shot in the camera” because it wasn’t going to happen yesterday.
The second picture is a black and white version done in Lightroom 4.
The third picture was heavily adjusted in Lightroom and Photoshop with the sky being added in Photoshop CS6.
The third picture is closer to what I remember seeing…. the wonder of digital photography where we can create the pictures we saw rather than relying on what the camera wants to give us.

Good PS work Russ! I like it!
Thanks. It took me a great deal of effort, frustration, and a couple of beers. lol
Nice photo Russel. I like the black and white version as well as the photoshopped one. Makes me realise how much I miss (not having the photo editing skills).
Reminds me that I wanted to put in a sky and then convert to black & white. I think it will be even better.
Amazing!
Love the third one, you are a master!
It looks like HDR.
Thanks, Pablo, although I haven’t yet even attempted to learn HDR. I do have Photomatix but it sits unopened on my computer while I try to master Photoshop CS6, Lightroom 4, Paintshop Pro X4, and Photo-Paint X6. lol
The third one does look like it’s an HDR, but you said you have only used LR and PS. Not sure what you did to it in PS, but I guess you’ve turned it into a pseudo-HDR. As you didn’t have the sun in the shot, you were able to meter for the train and chose to add the sky later.
In Lightroom I slid the Highlights slider all the way to the left to recover what little was in the sky. It did get some of what was lost on the front of the train and in the horizon though. I also slid the Shadows slider some to the right to get the detail back in the wheels. Then all I did was add the sky in CS6.
Wow, lots of cool trains here! And you know how much I love trains!
Hugs to Zoey! Can she be any cuter? Princess Lily, who is now meditating on her pillow, sends a big hello.
Careful now. Zoey the Cool Cat already has a big head………lol
